E-ISSN: 2291-2345Problems of Oriental Philosophy is a scientific and theoretical academic journal devoted to the study of philosophical thought in the Islamic cultural sphere and the broader intellectual heritage of Eastern civilizations. The journal provides an academic platform for the publication of original research in Oriental philosophy, history of philosophy, comparative philosophy, intellectual history, and interdisciplinary studies related to Eastern philosophical traditions.
The journal was founded in 1996 by the distinguished Azerbaijani philosopher Professor Zumrud Guluzade, Doctor of Philosophy and Honored Scientist of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Professor Guluzade played a decisive role in establishing the journal and shaping its scholarly orientation. Under her leadership, the journal became an important academic forum dedicated to the study and promotion of Oriental philosophical thought.
The journal was officially registered by the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Azerbaijan on April 2, 1996 (Registration No. 108). From its foundation until 2021, Professor Zumrud Guluzade served as the Editor-in-Chief. During this period, Dr. Solmaz Rzaguluzade, Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy, served as Deputy Editor-in-Chief, contributing significantly to the journal’s editorial development and scholarly activities.
Over the years, the journal has been published under the auspices of several academic institutions. In different periods, the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and the Institute of Philosophy of ANAS served as the publisher of the journal, supporting its scientific and organizational development. Since 2025, the official publisher of the journal has been IMCRA – International Meetings and Conferences Research Association.
From 1996 to 2024, the journal was published primarily in Azerbaijani and Russian languages under the titles:
- Şərq fəlsəfəsi problemləri (Azerbaijani)
- Проблемы восточной философии (Russian)
During this period, the journal served as an important scholarly platform for research on Oriental philosophy, intellectual history, and the philosophical traditions of Eastern civilizations.
To increase the international accessibility and scholarly impact of the journal, each published article included multilingual summaries (resumes). These summaries were presented in several major academic languages, including:
- Arabic
- Persian
- French
- German
- Turkish
- Russian
- Azerbaijani
This multilingual approach significantly enhanced the dissemination of the journal’s research and facilitated academic dialogue across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
From 1997 to 2019, the journal continued to publish articles in Azerbaijani and Russian, while summaries of the articles were presented annually in Azerbaijani, Russian, English, Turkish, German, French, Arabic, and Persian, further expanding the journal’s international readership.
In 2019, the editorial board introduced an updated publication policy to reflect the increasing international participation of scholars. According to this policy, the journal publishes articles in the original language submitted by the authors, while summaries are provided in Azerbaijani, Russian, and English.
The journal is published once a year and primarily focuses on the philosophical problems of the Islamic cultural world, while also addressing broader issues in Oriental philosophy and intellectual history. The journal welcomes scholarly contributions on topics such as:
- Islamic philosophy
- Eastern metaphysics and epistemology
- Ethics and philosophical anthropology
- Comparative philosophy
- Intellectual history of Eastern civilizations
- Philosophical traditions of the Islamic cultural sphere
The current Editor-in-Chief of the journal is Dr. Rahil Najafov. Dr. Najafov has long been associated with the journal’s editorial activities. From 2007 to 2020, he served as the assistant to Professor Zumrud Guluzade, the founder of the journal, and worked as the Executive Secretary of the journal. His long-term involvement has helped preserve the journal’s academic traditions and ensure the continuity of its scholarly mission.
Today, Problems of Oriental Philosophy continues to develop as an international academic platform that brings together philosophers, historians of ideas, and researchers interested in Eastern intellectual traditions. By promoting interdisciplinary research and international scholarly collaboration, the journal aims to contribute to the advancement of philosophical scholarship and to deepen global understanding of the rich intellectual heritage of the East.
